CHICAGO — Rent is April 1 for many residents, leaving tenants and landlords stressed from the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Landlords everywhere are offering to work with tenants to help them get through the crisis financially, and that includes Mac Properties in Hyde Park.

Despite that, some tenants are on a rent strike, withholding payment possibly until the crisis is over.

The first of the month is a stressful marker for many who have lost their jobs, and the stay-at-home order hampers the search for new work.

The housing dilemma was addressed in a virtual community meeting on Zoom Wednesday morning with local landlords, tenants and activists sharing ways to work through this frightful time.

Some are calling on the state to come up with a more extensive relief plan because building owners are in a crunch too.

The health and housing crisis stretches across the country.

A national rally will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday also on Zoom, with the hashtags #cancelrent and #cancelmortgages.
