Man faces attempted murder charge after pickup driven into officer; police then shoot at suspect, injuring him
A brawl broke out in the parking garage at 3140 N. Central Avenue., reportedly after the closing of the nearby Seven Nightclub, 3124 N. Central Ave.
Upon arrival, a witness reported to 25th (Grand Central) District officers that a man had just fired a gun during the fight, according to police. The man reportedly was then seen getting into the pickup truck, police said.
As officers approached the vehicle on foot, they ordered the man to exit, but he did not comply and then allegedly accelerated the vehicle in their direction, striking one of the officers, police said.
Officers then discharged their weapons at the vehicle, which fled the area, police said.
Officers located the vehicle near Belmont and Menard avenues, with the suspect lying on the ground, police said.
The suspect had sustained gunshot wounds to the body, and officers immediately rendered aid, police said. The Chicago Fire Department later arrived, and he was transported in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.
A weapon reportedly was recovered inside the man’s vehicle, police said.
The incident is being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the cooperation of the Chicago Police Department, police said.The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
The suspect, who was identified by police as Carlos Sanchez-Roa, age 28, of the 3000 block of Towle Avenue, Hammond, was charged with a felony count of attempted first-degree murder, a felony count of aggravated battery to a peace officer and a felony count of aggravated assault to a peace officer or fire worker, according to police.
The suspect had a detention hearing scheduled for June 2, but it was delayed a week because he remained hospitalized, the county said.
Information on the condition of the injured police officer was not immediately available.
The Seven Nightclub is located inside the former Manor Bowling. It is open on weekends and hosts admission events, including those for age 18 or older.
